Lex Fridman Podcast #419 with Sam Altman

🎙️💡 Yesterday, Lex Fridman shared a thought-provoking 2-hour interview with OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman. Here are some intriguing highlights:

• The OpenAI board saga and how Altman bounced back on mission
• Altman's response to Elon Musk's recent lawsuit against OpenAI
• 👀 His cryptic comment on the mysterious project Q*: "We're not ready to talk about that"
• Their approach to releasing products and building through an iterative process: "AI and surprise don't go well together"
• "Compute is going to be the currency of the future, maybe the most precious commodity in the world." This reminded me of something else that's also valuable and using computing power 😬
• ⚠His concerns about AI's future: "I think something is going to go theatrically wrong with AI"
• And of course, Lex, showing concern for Sam's wellbeing, asked: Is Sam's shift key broken? Why doesn't he use capitalized letters in his tweets? 😅

Here are a few other topics from the interview that I want to delve deeper into:

• I really liked how Altman rephrased the conversation from AI replacing jobs to replacing tasks. As someone experiencing this change firsthand (cough* writing LinkedIn posts), I've observed how AI tools can transform our day-to-day work.
• Though it reminds me of a Black Mirror episode, I constantly feel the need for an AI assistant that knows me better. Altman’s points about how memory capacity will improve and how this can be used to train Personal AIs, trained on ALL the conversations you've had, is both scary and intriguing 😶
• We're used to getting fast responses from AI and get frustrated when it takes more than 10 seconds. Altman's mention of AI possibly taking more time for hard questions in the future made me ponder how our interactions with these platforms could continue to evolve.
• Finally, one point closer to our industry. Altman finds conversations about replacing search “boring” but thinks LLMs (large language models) working WITH search engines is a “cooler” idea. He believes this is an area no one has “cracked yet”.
